The 2026 World Cup is the largest in history — 48 teams across the US, Canada, and Mexico, with 104 matches over 39 days. The format is brand new, and a lot of US viewers are confused about how 48 teams collapse into a single champion. Here's the full bracket explained.
The new format at a glance

Group stage
The 48 teams are split into 12 groups (A through L), each with 4 teams playing a round-robin. Each team plays 3 group matches.
Advancement rules:
- Top 2 from each group → automatic Round of 32 (24 teams)
- The 8 best third-place finishers across all 12 groups also advance (8 teams)
- Total: 32 teams to the knockout
That third-place rule is new. It rewards teams in tough groups (Group E "group of death" for example) and is why Polymarket prices Morocco, Senegal, and Croatia all above 35% to advance from a group where only 2 can finish top-2.
Round of 32 (new round)
This is the first time the World Cup has a Round of 32. It's single-elimination from here. Seeding is based on group position — group winners get easier matchups, third-place teams face the hardest seeds.
Knockouts
Standard single-elimination through Round of 16, quarters, semis, and the final. Extra time + penalties if tied after 90 minutes. No losers bracket.
